Our Place

Whatungarongaro te tangata toitū te whenua.

As people disappear from sight, the land remains.

Our home is in Te Tauihu, the top of the South Island of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

In centuries past, our people migrated from the north to the south in a series of epic migrations. Arriving in Te Tauihu, the northern South Island of New Zealand, between 1820 and 1832, our families have been connected to this region for almost 200 years.

Our country is defined by the beauty of its landscapes and the warmth of its people.

Known for its dramatic mountain ranges and miles of pristine coastlines, it is a place of creativity – unbound by convention. We have a strong sense of adventure and fun.

Our unique climate, varied geography, soil structure, and deeply passionate connection to the land contribute to the diverse and sophisticated styles we produce across our wine-growing regions.

Marlborough

At the top of New Zealand's South Island, Marlborough enjoys a maritime climate, with the Pacific Ocean to the east and Cook Strait to the north. Our cool climate and some of the most sunlight hours in Aotearoa, New Zealand, give us perfect growing conditions for grapes.

In Marlborough, hot days and cool nights allow our fruit to ripen slowly, ensuring high flavour intensity and naturally fresh acidity, a perfect combination for producing outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.

Marlborough has three main grape-growing sub-regions: the Wairau Valley, Southern Valleys and Awatere Valley. Our Kono Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grapes are grown and picked from all three sub-regions.

Nelson

Nelson has a gentle sun-drenched climate and a spectacular landscape. Grapes are grown in Moutere Hills and Waimea Plains; production is small, but the quality is impressive overall, including some excellent highlights. Nelson's sheltered topography protects from strong winds; its proximity to the sea gives milder temperatures than other South Island regions. Blessed with a remarkable number of clear days (regularly New Zealand's sunniest region) helps emphasize varietal character, and the high sunlight hours give wonderful fruit purity. Nelson has three main grape-growing sub-regions, Waimea Plains, Moutere Hills and Tasman Coastal.

The grapes for our Kono Pinot Gris are sourced from our vineyard, Whenua Matua, located in the Moutere Hills in the Nelson region.

The grapes for our Kono Pinot Noir are sourced from our vineyards in the Marlborough and Nelson regions of the South Island of New Zealand.
